Trump raises alarm over Canada’s northern defenses
In private discussions, Trump reportedly emphasized Canada’s perceived vulnerability to Russian or Chinese encroachment, urging that Ottawa increase defense spending, sources said.
Both Beijing and Moscow have dismissed these claims. China criticized Trump for using the narrative as a “pretext” for his Arctic ambitions, while Russia has consistently promoted the region as one for peaceful cooperation, opposing militarization.
“Trump is really worried about the US continuing to drift in the Western Hemisphere and is focused on this,” one official told the news agency. Another senior administration figure said the aim is “solidifying” US leadership in the hemisphere, with securing Canada’s northern border seen as an important element.
Unlike his approach to Greenland, officials emphasized that there are no plans to purchase Canadian territory or deploy US troops there. Instead, the administration is focused on encouraging Canada to strengthen its own defenses and expand bilateral military cooperation, including joint training, increased patrols, and upgraded early-warning systems.
