Trump concerned about Canada’s incompetence to safeguard territories

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has privately expressed growing concern about Canada’s ability to protect its northern Arctic territories from potential threats, citing national security risks similar to those he used to justify efforts regarding Greenland.

In discussions with aides, Trump emphasized that he believes Canada’s Arctic defenses are insufficient to counter Russian or Chinese influence, urging Ottawa to increase military spending and enhance capabilities. Officials said the focus is on strengthening bilateral cooperation, including joint training exercises, more frequent patrols, and improved early-warning systems, rather than stationing US troops or acquiring territory.

Trump’s concern reflects a broader aim of consolidating US influence in the Western Hemisphere and ensuring security in the Arctic region. However, both Moscow and Beijing have rejected claims that their activities threaten Canadian sovereignty, and there is no indication of any aggressive action beyond urging Canada to bolster its defenses.
